Inclusivity and Indie Authors: The Case for Community Based Publishing

“Authors of color who are excluded from the traditional publishing industry are increasingly turning to self-publishing. As an indie author, I have the freedom to write about the things that matter most to the members of my community rather than waiting for approval from a gatekeeper who lacks the cultural competence needed to truly appreciate my work. My Rosetta Press imprint produces stories that are culturally specific and organic—not forced through a filter in order to be labeled “universal.” Diverse books can foster cross-cultural understanding at an early age. At a moment when 75 percent of whites have no friends of color and public schools are rapidly “resegregating,” the need for diverse children’s literature is greater than ever.”
Join the Center for Earth Energy and Democracy and Ancestry Books on Friday, September 16th from 10am – 12pm at Lucy Laney Elementary for this workshop with author, publisher and educator Zetta Elliott. The Most Epic Used Book Sale Ever!

Last year Ancestry Books hosted a gently used book sale at our house to support summer programing. We had over 3,000 used book donations and the money we raised supported us brining out the brilliant Alexis Pauline Gumbs for an incredible and free workshop.

This year Ancestry is at it again and we are teaming up with the Progressive Library Guild and American Library Association Student Chapter of St. Catherine University’s MLIS Program. All books will be $5 and under!! All proceeds will go toward supporting free Fall literary event programing in the Twin Cities!!

The book sale will be at 2400 Lowry Avenue N Minneapolis 55411 on Saturday June 4th and Sunday June 5th from 9am – 5pm. Hope to see you there!!
